Heavy rain and the Little Calumet River

The region sits along the Little Calumet River. The National Weather Service issued flood warnings for the river at Munster in June 2026, and noted that at 12.5 feet most areas outside the levee-protected area in Hammond and Munster are inundated.

The Town of Highland publishes reports on sanitary sewer overflows. Its report for July to December 2025 records overflows during a storm of 6.96 inches over 72 hours (August 17 to 19, 2025), and its January to June 2026 report records overflows after 5.15 inches over 72 hours (June 11 to 12, 2026).

What That Means for Your Coverage

Water backup

Water that comes up through a drain or sump pump is often excluded from a standard homeowners policy. Many companies sell a water backup endorsement. Ask what the limit is and what it costs.

Flood

Rising water from outside is generally covered, if at all, by a separate flood policy. Look up your address in FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center, and ask us about options. Flood policies often have a waiting period.

Renters and businesses

Renters and business owners face the same exclusions. Check belongings, inventory, and business income, not only the building.

Reports describe overflows into the storm sewer and river, not flooded homes, and nothing here means a specific property is at risk. Coverage terms, exclusions, availability, and pricing vary by company and by risk. This page is general information, not a policy or individualized advice.
